Our School Lunches

ISS provides the catering services at our school.

Their mission is to ‘Feed Hungry Minds’ through serving lunches which are healthy, delicious and offer great value and choice.

Quality Ingredients

Over 90% of the food is freshly prepared onsite each day by trained chefs using great quality ingredients, including:

  • Free range eggs
  • Sustainably sourced fish
  • Meat which satisfies UK welfare standards
  • A wide range of seasonal and British produce

All dishes on the menus are free from undesirable food additives and hydrogenated fats and do not include any GM ingredients.

Catering for Different Needs

ISS works with parents, guardians, schoolteachers and pupil councils to develop their menus and ensure each day offers tasty and nutritious meal options.

Lunch choices include a range of meat and vegetarian dishes accompanied by fresh vegetables.

Pupils can also add salad items to their plates from a self-serve salad bar, which changes daily. Desserts include hot and cold puddings and fresh fruit.

ISS can provide bespoke dietary menus where requested via their Special Diets Process. For more information on special menus, email ISS’ Nutrition Team at nutrition@uk.issworld.com

Pupil Experience

ISS’ service excellence concept, Feeding Excellence Every Day (FEED), looks at the school meals service through the eyes of children to try to make every moment of lunch enjoyable – from ordering and eating to clearing and leaving.

It focuses on great customer service and improvements to the dining environment such as snack stops, vibrant salad bars and exciting hydration stations.

Through introducing these changes, they hope to make lunch a time which every child looks forward to every school day!

Theme Day Fun!

To support educational activity and add even more fun to lunchtimes, ISS regularly holds events and celebrations with special menus or tasters.

Examples include World Book Day, where the catering teams dress up and hold competitions, and Green Fingers Gardening Week, which focuses on the seed to plate journey and gets children tasting and voting on new dishes to add to the menus.

Water-only School

Walnut Tree Walk is now a water-only school.

This includes children who have a school meal as well as the children who bring in a packed lunch.

Water Cooling machines are available on each floor and we encourage  all children to bring in a water bottle to have in class with them.

Packed Lunches

Packed lunches can include:

  • a sandwich with a healthy savoury filling or equivalent main meal (eg. pasta, noodles, rice, cous cous, potato, soup, falafel, curry etc.)
  • a portion of fresh or dried fruit without added sugar (eg. apple, mango, grapes, raisins) AND a portion of vegetables (eg. carrot sticks, mini tomatoes, cucumber, celery etc.)
  • yoghurt, fromage frais, cheese or similar dairy item or other non-dairy protein item (eg. tofu, seeds, salami).
  • water
  • ONE TREAT ITEM - choose from a small cake OR a biscuit OR a cereal bar OR a small packet of crisps or snacks. (Please be aware that these items often have high fat, sugar and salt levels)

Please DO NOT INCLUDE:

  • sweets
  • fizzy drinks such as cola, Lucozade, and lemonade
  • fruit drinks (eg. Ribena, Fruit Shoots) or ‘sports’ drinks as these items contain very high levels of sugar.
